Watched "Rent" yesterday afternoon with Angie. One B-I-G Disappointment.
The stage backdrop never changes, the music wasn’t fantastic, the sound system was horrible, voices of the actors were muffled, making it really unclear to me what they were talking about and the plot was weak too – about a group of artistes struggling with poverty, their loves and hates in downtown New York. You probably thought this would be one great story to watch, but trust me, it was plain lousy.
Regretted paying $70 bucks for the show.
On the other hand, I was kinda impressed with Karen Mok’s performance. Being the only Asian in the entire New York cast, I thought she was quite open in her acting, although as mentioned earlier, the dialogue could be made clearer. Not just to her, but to the entire cast. Half the time, I couldn’t quite catch what the actors were saying. They were either shouting or singing really loud into the mic, making it impossible for anyone to comprehend their interactions.
All in all, one huge disappointment.
Makes me question how on earth did "Rent" win so many awards in the Broadway industry in the recent years. It sure doesn’t make sense to me.
Mental note: Never trust the media’s rating on musicals or performances of any kind. Sometimes, they can be wrong too. Very wrong.
